Let’s talk about your 1st diagnosis…

Updated: May 6, 2025

Going to the doctor’s office is already a stressful time. It’s even scarier when you know that you are going in to see if you could possibly have that dreaded word that is Cancer. I remember when I was diagnosed. What a nightmare! I have never felt so alone, scared, anxious, lost, you name it, and I was probably experiencing every emotion possible. Having said this, did you find you feel this way too?

It’s okay to feel all the emotions. Being diagnosed with cancer is a frightening time. If you want to scream, then do it, if you want to cry, then cry. Allow yourself time to process. These are normal emotions. After you have screamed and cried it all out, it’s time to move on with your battle plan. This is the time when you will meet with your oncologist. If you need help finding one, please let your primary doctor or the doctor that diagnosed your cancer know. They have the knowledge and resources you will need for the first step.

Once you meet with the oncologist doctor, you will then start your care plan. I like to call it my battle plan. The oncologist will work on a Care plan designed specifically for you. He will work with a team of doctors who will have your best interest in mind. At this time, the oncologist may or may not send you for a scan to see if the cancer has spread to any other area. He will also have a blood test ordered. This will be the first of many. Once he has all the information in front of him, the doctor will then start to assemble your team depending on what your needs are. From here the oncologist will be your go to for the medical team for all your cancer needs. He will be the one to keep your team of doctors informed, he will also work with your primary doctor by keeping them updated.

Having mentioned the primary doctor, they will still be your go too for colds, flu and other issues that are not related to your cancer. Anything else that is related to your cancer, contact the oncologist. Always ask questions. If you don’t’ understand something or if you need more information, just ask. The medical team is here for you. I can’t say enough about my doctor, Dr.Shaker who works with the Florida Cancer group here in Fl. The nurses, the doctors, everyone involved in my care was outstanding. I’m beyond grateful for all their help. This is the type of team you will also be assigned to. The team will have your primary doctor, oncologist, surgeon, radiologist and any other specialist you may need. You will be surrounded by a wonderful group who just want to see you win this battle. Let them guide you to the most successful treatments to take care of you.

Lots of blessings and support being sent your way! You got this!
